In order to submit an employment permit application in Ireland, the applicant must pay the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) a specific fee via card online. The employment permit application fees to be paid depend on the permit type and duration, which are broken down below. A permit application cannot be submitted without the payment of the application fee, and the application is automatically submitted once the payment is made on the online application.
Applicants, potential applicants and employers should be aware of the associated fees for permits when deciding to submit an application.
Application Fees By Permit Type & Duration
DETE’s application fee is determined by the type of employment permit one is applying for, and the duration of same.

There are no application fees payable in respect of the following application types:
- Applications where the Employer has registered charitable status and same is confirmed by the Revenue Commissioners via documentation.
- Applications in respect of a non-EEA national married to or in a civil partnership with an EEA national
- General EP renewal applications in respect of Unlimited Permits.
- Change of Employer applications where the permit holder wishes to transfer their current permit to a new employer and their role is under the same SOC code.
Who Can Pay the DETE Permit Application Fee?
The application fee must be paid to DETE by one of the parties to the permit application. The person who makes the payment is known as the ‘Applicant’ to DETE in terms of payment and refunds etc. The fee can therefore be paid by the Employer, the Foreign National, the Authorised Agent, or another party – bearing in mind that the payor’s details must be inputted into the employment permit application form.
How to Make Payment

Permit application fees must all be paid in the same manner, regardless of who is making the payment. DETE now only accepts payment via card online on the EPOS website. Up to 2021, DETE did permit payment of application fees via EFT (electronic funds transfer) and cheques, but this practice has since ceased.
Once the application form is complete and submitted, and all required documents have been uploaded to the application, the user may proceed to the card payment screen. From there, they can input their card details & contact details, and authorise the payment via their bank. Once the payment is made successfully, the application will be automatically submitted. The payor will see a success message on screen and will receive a submission confirmation email shortly thereafter, confirming the application fee paid.
Each employment permit application must be paid for individually. At this time, it is not possible for Employers or Agents to make bulk payments for groups of applications.
Refunds
In the case of an unsuccessful application, 90% of the application fee paid will be refunded by DETE to the Applicant that was indicated on the application form. 10% is used to cover DETE’s administrative costs in processing the rejected application. If an application is rejected, DETE will send the Applicant a Refund Request Form via email that they must sign & return in order for DETE to issue the refund. The refund is issued back via the original payment method.
